What exactly is a domain name?

A domain name is an address that uniquely identifies your own personal space on the internet. The domain name of a website is usually either the company name such as apple.com or a name related to the web site content such as cheapcomputers.com.

A domain name enables people to locate and view your site by typing the domain into the address bar of a web browser i.e. Internet Explorer / Firefox - so it's important to choose a domain that's easy to spell and remember.

On a technical level, the domain has associated name servers which tell your browser how to connect to the server storing your actual web site content.
